Hi, short blog post today. Again I was super exited with new features Microsoft brings to the table with the latest release waves. One of them was a highly requested and anticipated feature – possibility to relate one activity with multiple records in the system. For years we had to build custom workarounds to do so (I have one that will be part of a small series of upcoming posts), and now Microsoft promised to deliver a working OOTB feature. Sweet!
At first I was hoping that they will modify the regardingobjectid to allow multiple selection. That would be the elegant way to do so, but no. Why bother? We’ve gotten ourselves a new shiny field “related”. As per documentation the preview only includes emails, but it will rollout to all activities once it hits GA as you can still see on the webpage (at least at the time of writing this blogpost).

That’s great, we’re one month after go live, but you can’t find it anywhere other than email. I checked on several environments, different regions, nothing.
I asked Microsoft for help and got the reply that… they didn’t roll it out and in fact it was postponed to a later time. When? – I hear you ask. Nobody knows. As per an email with MS support, this is a feature request that the product group is still evaluating. The documentation will be updated though, so for all of you who were waiting for this feature – we still have to wait.
What we have?
Ok, so what we have is still interesting and if you stayed this long with my rants, here’s some meat.
First of all, add the new field to the form. Once that’s done, we can go to the email and select all related records we want. As shown on screen below, you can chose from variety of tables. It’s worth mentioning, that related is of type party list.

And that’s it 🙂 Emails are shown on timelines of each record added to the related field:

Stay coding!
